A dictation round with your own words
Hear a word, type the spelling, then check it
A spelling dictation is the same at home as at school: someone says the word, the child spells it, then the answers are checked. Snap Spell can take the reading part, and you choose whether your child types or writes.
Free to start: 2 word lists of up to 100 words each. Pro: US$2.99/month, US$19.99/year or US$29.99 once (UK £2.99/£19.99/£29.99; Australia A$4.99/A$29.99/A$49.99).
Snap Spell
Can I practice spelling dictation with my own word list?
Yes. In Solo Test, your child will hear each word and type the spelling, and the app checks it straight away. For a paper dictation, Auto Dictation reads the whole list with time to write, and you mark the answers at the end.
Typed dictation: Solo Test
Choose Words per round (10, 20, or All) and an order: List Order, Shuffled, or Most missed first. Each answer is checked as it is typed in. At the end you see how many were right first time, almost, or wrong, and Retry these words runs the missed ones again.
Paper dictation: Auto Dictation
Open Practice Together and choose Auto Dictation.
- 1 Have paper and a pencil ready.
- 2 Each word is read out, by default twice, with six seconds to write it.
- 3 Use Pause, Read Again, or Previous Word if your child needs a moment.
- 4 After the last word, choose End & Check Answers.
- 5 Mark Right or Mark Wrong for each word, or Mark the Rest Right.
Change the pace in Dictation Settings
Readings per word can be 1, 2, or 3. Time to write each word can be 3, 6, 10, or 15 seconds. Changes apply from the next word, so you can slow down in the middle of a dictation without starting again.
Three ways to run the same dictation
All three use the same saved list. Pick the one that fits tonight.

Questions about dictation
Does Auto Dictation keep reading if the screen locks?
Yes. Reading continues in the background, so the phone can lie face down on the table.
What if we stop halfway?
Choose End & Check Answers to mark the words read so far, or Leave Without Checking to stop without changing any word.
