Before the spelling test

Use your spelling list to decide what to practice before a test

The weekly spelling words come home on Monday and the test is on Friday. A few short rounds spread over the week usually do more than one long session the night before.

Free to start: 2 word lists of up to 100 words each. Pro: US$2.99/month, US$19.99/year or US$29.99 once (UK £2.99/£19.99/£29.99; Australia A$4.99/A$29.99/A$49.99).

Can I practice a spelling test at home with my own word list?

Yes. Add this week’s list once, practice it in short rounds during the week, and finish with a run-through that feels like the real test.

A simple plan for test week

Adjust the days to your school’s timetable.

  1. 1 The day the list comes home: add it, then run one Solo Test in List Order to see which words are already known.
  2. 2 Midweek: short rounds of 10 words with Most missed first, so the hard words come up early.
  3. 3 Each day: open Tricky Words and practice the latest 10 missed words, or with Pro, the words due today.
  4. 4 The night before: one run-through of all the words, Shuffled, the way the teacher will read them.

Make the run-through feel like the test

If the test is written on paper, do the final round with Auto Dictation instead of typing: in Dictation Settings, set Readings per word to match how often the teacher reads each word. Mark the paper afterwards and the words marked wrong are the ones to look at once more.

Keep the routine without nagging

Practice Reminder sends a nudge on the days and at the time you choose. Turn on Remind Me After a Long Break if a quiet week tends to turn into a forgotten one.

Questions about test practice

What if the list arrives the day before the test?

Run one Solo Test with All words, then tap Retry these words to go over the missed ones again. Leave the rest for Tricky Words after the test.

Should my child type or write?

Typing is quicker for daily rounds. If the school test is handwritten, finish the week with at least one paper round in Auto Dictation.
