Tricky Words

Missed spelling words come back until they stick

A word missed on Monday is easy to forget by Friday. Tricky Words keeps every missed word in one place and brings it back at the right time, so you do not have to remember which ones to review.

Free to start: 2 word lists of up to 100 words each. Pro: US$2.99/month, US$19.99/year or US$29.99 once (UK £2.99/£19.99/£29.99; Australia A$4.99/A$29.99/A$49.99).

Snap Spell

What happens to the spelling words my child misses?

Each word answered wrong, or only almost right, goes to Tricky Words, whichever list it came from. Free can practice the latest 10 missed words. With Pro, each word comes back on a review schedule: the next day, then 3, 7 and 14 days after each on-time right answer. After four on-time right answers in a row, the word is learned and leaves Tricky Words.

How the review schedule works

The review schedule is part of Pro. It moves forward only when a word is right on or after its review day.

  1. 1 A word is missed in practice: it goes to Tricky Words, due tomorrow.
  2. 2 Right on its review day: the next review is 3 days later.
  3. 3 Right again: 7 days later, then 14 days later.
  4. 4 The fourth on-time right answer in a row: the word is learned and leaves.
  5. 5 Missed at any point: it is due tomorrow again and the count starts over.

What you see in Tricky Words

The top shows how many words are in Tricky Words and how many are due today. Each word has bars for its on-time right answers in a row; four bars and it is learned. How review works explains the schedule inside the app.

Questions about Tricky Words

Does a right answer before the review day count?

It is marked right in that round, but it does not move the schedule. Only answers on or after the review day count toward the four in a row.

Do words from last week’s list stay in Tricky Words?

Yes. A missed word stays until it is learned, even after you move on to a new list. Deleting the list also removes its words from Tricky Words.
