Read the words you already have

Let your spelling list be read aloud

Reading out every spelling word each night takes time, and a child cannot practice alone if nobody reads the words. Snap Spell reads them instead, in a clear voice, as many times as needed.

Free to start: 2 word lists of up to 100 words each. Pro: US$2.99/month, US$19.99/year or US$29.99 once (UK £2.99/£19.99/£29.99; Australia A$4.99/A$29.99/A$49.99).

Snap Spell

Can an app read my spelling words aloud?

Yes. Once a list is saved, Snap Spell reads each word aloud in the voice and speed you choose, so your child can practice the list without someone reading it out. In Solo Test, it also checks each typed spelling.

Choose how the words sound

Open Voice & Reading Speed in Settings.

Apple voices

Free on every iPhone. Enhanced or Premium versions appear once you have installed them in the iPhone’s own voice settings.

Pro Natural voices

Voices made for spelling words, downloaded once, on iOS 26 or later. A word missing from the voice pack is read by the Apple voice.

Reading speed

Slow, Normal, or Fast. Slow helps with long words and with children who are just starting.

Practice alone with Solo Test

This is the mode for a child who wants to practice without an adult reading the list.

  1. 1 Open the list and choose Solo Test.
  2. 2 The word plays on its own. Tap Replay to hear it again.
  3. 3 Type the spelling. A close answer shows “Almost — try again”.
  4. 4 Stuck? Show answer reveals the word but counts it as wrong.
  5. 5 Stop at any time: progress is saved, and next time starts at the next word.

Or read with your child

In Practice Together, you hold the phone and the app plays each word while your child spells it aloud or on paper. Auto Dictation reads the whole list with time to write, for a paper test run.

Questions about read-aloud practice

What if a word sounds wrong?

Long-press the word in the list and choose Sounds wrong? Tell us. Meanwhile, you can try another voice in Voice & Reading Speed.

Can I hear one word again without starting over?

Yes. Use Replay in Solo Test, Read Again in Auto Dictation, or long-press any word in the list and choose Speak.
