Accent, pronunciation, and US or UK spelling

Practice with the accent and spelling your child’s school uses

Families often learn English in one country and send their children to school in another. You do not have to be sure of every pronunciation yourself: Snap Spell says each word, in the accent you choose.

Free to start: 2 word lists of up to 100 words each. Pro: US$2.99/month, US$19.99/year or US$29.99 once (UK £2.99/£19.99/£29.99; Australia A$4.99/A$29.99/A$49.99).

Snap Spell

Should my child practice American or British English?

Practice the one your child’s school uses. In Snap Spell, set the voice accent to match and save each word exactly as it is spelled on the school list. When typed answers are checked, the other spelling of the same word, such as color for colour, also counts as right.

Choose the voice accent

Go to Settings, then Voice & Reading Speed. Under Voice Country / Accent, choose United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, or South Africa, or leave System Default to follow your iPhone. Only Apple voices already installed for that accent appear. With Pro, Natural voices add a female and a male voice for each of US, UK, and Australian English.

How US and UK spellings are checked

Snap Spell never changes the spelling on your list.

Saved as written

If the list says colour, the word stays colour, whether you scan it or type it.

Either form is right

In Solo Test, typing color for colour, or favourite for favorite, counts as right.

Different words stay different

Pairs that are separate words, such as tyre and tire or cheque and check, are not treated as the same word.

When you are not sure how a word sounds

Long-press the word and choose Speak to hear it again, or open the word and tap Pronounce to search for its pronunciation on the web. If a word sounds wrong, choose Sounds wrong? Tell us from the same menu.

Questions about accents and spelling

What if the teacher reads with a different accent?

Choose the closest accent in Voice Country / Accent. The spelling of most words is the same in every accent, so practice still matches the test.

I learned English in another country. Can I still help?

Yes. Let the app say the words, and use the list on screen to check your child’s answers. You never have to read a word aloud yourself.
